Why First Aid Matters in Construction

Construction sites have a number of hazards, from falls and crush injuries to power tool accidents and chemical exposure. Quick thinking and the right first-aid response can mean the difference between a near-miss and something more serious.

By investing in accredited first aid training, you’re ensuring that your team can react in a swift and efficient manner and help save lives and limit injuries.

Courses Built for Building Sites

We understand the construction industry, and our training reflects that. Our courses focus on the types of accidents most common on-site and how to deal with them in real-world conditions.

Popular options include:

  • Emergency First Aid at Work (1 Day) – Ideal for site workers and labourers
  • First Aid at Work (3 Days) – For supervisors, site managers, and those in charge of health & safety
  • First Aid at Work Requalification (2 Days) – To renew an existing qualification before it expires
  • Manual Handling – Add this to your training session for extra site safety support

Construction First Aid Course FAQs

Yes. The HSE requires all employers to provide adequate first aid arrangements on-site. That includes having trained first aiders available and access to the right equipment.

Construction sites are legally required to follow the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981, which means employers must ensure adequate and appropriate first aid provision for everyone on site. That includes having a well-stocked first aid kit, an appointed person responsible for first aid arrangements, and ensuring workers know exactly where to go and who to speak to in an emergency.

There’s no magic number for how many trained first aiders you need, but a good rule of thumb is one trained first aider per 50 workers, with more needed for larger or higher-risk sites. Employers must carry out a first aid needs assessment to determine what equipment, facilities, and training are necessary based on the site’s size, layout, and risk level. Emergency procedures must be clear, kits should be checked and topped up regularly, and all workers should know where the first aid resources are because time matters when something goes wrong on-site.

Most workers benefit from the one-day Emergency First Aid at Work course. The three-day First Aid at Work course is recommended for supervisors or those with greater responsibility.

The certificate lasts for 3 years, but annual refreshers are recommended. We’ll keep track and send reminders when you’re due for renewal.

Yes. We are able to deliver training at your site, yard, or offices, whichever suits you best! This makes things easier for the course participants.

Not always, but you need a marked first aid kit and a designated area for treatment if a room isn’t available.

Technically, the law doesn’t say you must have a fully trained first aider on every construction site, but most sites do need one. Under the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, all construction sites are legally required to have a well-stocked first aid kit and an appointed person to oversee first aid arrangements. This person is responsible for looking after the kit, handling incidents, and calling emergency services.

However, if your site is at higher risk (and let’s be honest, most building sites are), first aid needs assessment will likely show that you do need at least one trained first aider. Sites with more workers, complex layouts, or more dangerous tasks (think working at height or with heavy machinery) will almost always require one or more trained first aiders on site to stay compliant and keep everyone safe.
