Why Schools Need First Aid Training

Schools are busy, and accidents can happen anytime, whether in the playground, science lab, sports hall, or staff room. Knowing what to do in those first few moments makes all the difference.

Our courses are designed to equip school staff with the confidence and skills to respond quickly and calmly to various medical situations. From minor scrapes to more serious incidents, we’ve got it covered.

Tailored Training for the Education Sector

We understand the requirements of educational facilities, so we offer courses that comply with HSE, Ofsted, and Department for Education guidance. We can also deliver sessions during inset days, after hours, or at times that suit your schedule.

Some of our most popular school-based training options include:

Paediatric First Aid (12hr) – Ideal for EYFS and nursery staff

Emergency First Aid at Work (1 Day) – Great for general school staff

First Aid at Work (3 Days) – For those with a more comprehensive responsibility

Annual First Aid Refresher (Half Day) – To keep skills sharp and up-to-date

First Aid for Mental Health – Supporting emotional wellbeing in schools

What You’ll Learn

Our interactive sessions mix real-life scenarios with hands-on practice. Expect your team to walk away knowing how to:

  1. Perform CPR on adults and children
  2. Use an AED confidently
  3. Treat common school injuries (cuts, bumps, fractures, asthma attacks, allergies, and more)
  4. Handle choking incidents
  5. Respond to seizures, unconsciousness, and breathing problems
  6. Manage first aid in sports and PE settings

We also ensure you know how to log incidents correctly and follow the right procedures post-incident.

First Aid Training For Schools FAQs

Depending on your school’s size and layout, the HSE recommends having enough trained staff to cover all shifts and breaks. Our team are on hand to help with any questions you may have regarding staff training.

Schools are legally required to provide adequate first aid provision for staff, pupils, and visitors under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981. While there’s no set number of first aiders, schools must conduct risk assessments to determine their specific needs. Factors like the size of the school, number of pupils, and level of risk (e.g. playgrounds, science labs, PE) all play a role. EYFS settings must have at least one staff member with a 12-hour Paediatric First Aid qualification. At the same time, primary and secondary schools train staff in Emergency First Aid at Work or First Aid at Work.

The Department for Education recommends that schools take a proactive approach, ensuring that trained staff are always available. First aid kits should be well-stocked and accessible, and serious incidents may need to be reported under RIDDOR. At FAST First Aid, we can help you assess your school’s needs and provide fully compliant, practical training with flexible on-site delivery options.

Yes, teachers can legally give first aid and are often expected to. While no teacher can be forced to take on first aid responsibilities unless it’s part of their contract, all staff have a duty of care and are expected to act like any “reasonably prudent parent” would in an emergency. That might include providing reassurance, calling for help, or taking basic action to prevent further harm.

The National Education Union (NEU) confirms that schools have a statutory duty to provide first aid, and staff are expected to respond appropriately when needed. Many schools choose to train teaching staff, support teams, and lunchtime supervisors so that help is always on hand.

Paediatric first aid is required for EYFS and nursery settings. Emergency first aid at work or first aid at work are more suitable for key stage and secondary settings.
